The topic of discussion remains the recognition of Allah. In this regard I have discussed with you those meanings that have to do with things that are benefits of ilm. I have named six or seven such things in the lectures over the last few days. We have discussed yesterday material benefits of ilm. We discussed that you gain material benefits as a result of ilm. We have discussed this in detail yesterday. I wish to discuss another point with regard to this today.

وَكَيْفَ تَصْبِرُ عَلَى مَا لَمْ تُحِطْ بِهِ خُبْرًا {68}

[Pickthal 18:68] How canst thou bear with that whereof thou canst not compass any knowledge?

This ayat that states ilm and marifat increase sabr (patience). Once a person gains ilm and marifat and gets sabir then he will benefit from it.

قَالَ لَهُ مُوسَى هَلْ أَتَّبِعُكَ عَلَى أَن تُعَلِّمَنِ مِمَّا عُلِّمْتَ رُشْدًا {66}

[Pickthal 18:66] Moses said unto him: May I follow thee, to the end that thou mayst teach me right conduct of that which thou hast been taught?

قَالَ إِنَّكَ لَن تَسْتَطِيعَ مَعِيَ صَبْرًا {67}

[Pickthal 18:67] He said: Lo! thou canst not bear with me.

In this ayat Moosa asks Khizr to gain ilm. Moosa states should I follow you so that you may teach me that knowledge you possess. Khizr replied that oh Moses you will not be able to follow me correctly to gain ilm. This is because you do not have the amount of patience required to gain ilm. Thus it is evident that if you want to gain ilm then you have to be sabir (patient).
These ayats have signs that will guide those who have patience and spend time gaining ilm.
Moula Ali has stated that for a student six things are required. The first thing is to have an excellent teacher. The next is to have a lot of time to follow the teachings of the teacher. In order to spend time learning you have to be patient. The manner of teaching by the teacher. Enough means to live from day to day. Thus those of our shia have reached a stage in their development as a marja they have spent a lot of time and patience to get there. Shaitan misguides us with money, position and other things. This misguides man and he is misled to try and get things other than knowledge then he loses both ilm and money. Moula Ali has stated that if you start chasing the world then it will run away from you. Moula Ali in the nahjul balagha states that he has given talaq to the world three times. There are numerous stories regarding this. One states that the duniya or materialism appeared before Moula Ali as a beautiful woman and offered any service he would desire. Moula replied that I recognize you well please go away.

Kharoon was a cousin of Hazrat Moosa. When Kharoon left the palace he had 300 slaves on one side and 300 slave girls on the other and 4000 courtiers on a white horse with magnificent clothes. When the Bani Israel saw him the prayed to Allah to give them similar wealth. Those people who had ilm stated you are incorrect in your desire for this wealth. The sawaab of Allah is much better than this wealth you desire. This is discussed in the ayat below:

وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ وَيْلَكُمْ ثَوَابُ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ لِّمَنْ آمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا وَلَا يُلَقَّاهَا إِلَّا الصَّابِرُونَ {80}

[Pickthal 28:80] But those who had been given knowledge said: Woe unto you! The reward of Allah for him who believeth and doeth right is better, and only the steadfast will obtain it.

A sign of a momin is that he does not yearn for wealth of this world but yearns for the hereafter. Ilm and marifat takes you toward zohad. Zohad does not mean that you get disgusted with this world and live like a saint on the other hand it means to take every benefit you can from this world and take every precaution not to commit any sin. Those who have ilm progress toward ilm. Imam Jaffer E Sadeq (AS) stated that those of Allah’s slaves are zahid get zohad via their knowledge. Thus man should try to get as much ilm as possible so that they may get more zohad.
Ayat of the Quran states that the grace of Allah is only for the sabir. Thus do not see the glitter of this world and get impatient regarding reward from Allah. If you are patient and have ilm Allah will give you the reward in the hereafter. Thus those people desired wealth in this world realize that you need patience even to gain wealth in this world. If someone rejects the materialism of this world and is patient then he will gain in the hereafter.
Imam Ali (AS) states that if you have khinaat (being satisfied with a modest sum of money) then you will get zohad. Moula states that khinaat is such a wealth that you can never spend it all. If you have zohad and patience then the work done by one dollar is done by fifty cents with the barakat of Allah.
Prophet Moosa told Kharoon to give part of his wealth to the poor. He replied that Moosa is after my wealth and is jealous of me. Moosa replied please take out your zakat. He refused. Then he asked for one penny and he refused. Then this man decided to insult Moosa. He paid a woman a lot of money to accuse Moosa of running after her. Then she came forward and instead of accusing Moosa of chasing her she replied that Moosa is her Prophet.

فَخَسَفْنَا بِهِ وَبِدَارِهِ الْأَرْضَ فَمَا كَانَ لَهُ مِن فِئَةٍ يَنصُرُونَهُ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ المُنتَصِرِينَ {81}

[Pickthal 28:81] So We caused the earth to swallow him and his dwelling-place. Then he had no host to help him against Allah, nor was he of those who can save themselves.

وَأَصْبَحَ الَّذِينَ تَمَنَّوْا مَكَانَهُ بِالْأَمْسِ يَقُولُونَ وَيْكَأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَبْسُطُ الرِّزْقَ لِمَن يَشَاء مِنْ عِبَادِهِ وَيَقْدِرُ لَوْلَا أَن مَّنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْنَا لَخَسَفَ بِنَا وَيْكَأَنَّهُ لَا يُفْلِحُ الْكَافِرُونَ {82}

[Pickthal 28:82] And morning found those who had coveted his place but yesterday crying: Ah, welladay! Allah enlargeth the provision for whom He will of His slaves and straiteneth it (for whom He will). If Allah had not been gracious unto us He would have caused it to swallow us (also). Ah, welladay! the disbelievers never prosper.

This made Allah get furious at Kharoon. Then the earth started to swallow up Kharoon. Thus if one insults the Prophet of Allah then Allah himself gives azaab to him. During the discourse of Imam Ali a man accused him and the zahab of Allah descended on him. In Ghadeer Harris Ibn E Nauman E Fehri spoke against the Prophet very rudely and a small stone killed him due to azaab from Allah. As he turned and left the Prophet he stated that Oh Allah if he (the Prophet) speaks truly then may azaab strike me. A stone struck him and went through him and then this ayat was revealed to the Prophet:

سَأَلَ سَائِلٌ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ {1}

[Pickthal 70:1] A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall

Thus do you now realize how important Imamat is and Nabuwat is? If you state that the Prophet is a liar or the person nominated by him as his heir is a liar then Allah will punish him. In a similar fashion those who insult Bibi Fatima the insult the Prophet and Allah will send his lanaat and the lanaat of the angels is on them. We give lanaat to the same people because of their behavior toward the Prophet of Allah.
As Kharoon started to get embedded in the earth along with his wealth he started asking forgiveness from Moosa. Moosa was furious and told the earth to keep swallowing up Kharoon. However in the case of our Prophet when Hinda the murderer of his uncle came before him he treated her kindly with forgiveness. Moosa is one who represents the fury of Allah and our Prophet is the one who represents the Rehmat of Allah. This attribute is not for Moosa and Haroon. As the earth kept swallowing up Kharoon those who were desiring wealth started praying that they not get such wealth. Thus if Allah wishes then he can take away the wealth and ilm he has granted.

قَالَ لَهُ مُوسَى هَلْ أَتَّبِعُكَ عَلَى أَن تُعَلِّمَنِ مِمَّا عُلِّمْتَ رُشْدًا {66}

[Pickthal 18:66] Moses said unto him: May I follow thee, to the end that thou mayst teach me right conduct of that which thou hast been taught?

قَالَ إِنَّكَ لَن تَسْتَطِيعَ مَعِيَ صَبْرًا {67}

[Pickthal 18:67] He said: Lo! thou canst not bear with me.

وَكَيْفَ تَصْبِرُ عَلَى مَا لَمْ تُحِطْ بِهِ خُبْرًا {68}

[Pickthal 18:68] How canst thou bear with that whereof thou canst not compass any knowledge?

Thus Khizr told Moosa that you will be unable to do sabr as you do not know that which you desire. Moosa being a nabi of Allah does not realize that he lacks the patience. Khizr realizes that Moosa will be unable to have patience to gain the knowledge. Thus it is evident that there are some prophets that have the knowledge of ghaib. Thus if you do not have marifat then ilm and sabr do not take you to the high position.

فَانطَلَقَا حَتَّى إِذَا رَكِبَا فِي السَّفِينَةِ خَرَقَهَا قَالَ أَخَرَقْتَهَا لِتُغْرِقَ أَهْلَهَا لَقَدْ جِئْتَ شَيْئًا إِمْرًا {71}

[Pickthal 18:71] So they twain set out till, when they were in the ship, he made a hole therein. (Moses) said: Hast thou made a hole therein to drown the folk thereof? Thou verily hast done a dreadful thing.

Then Khizr put a hole in the boat they were traveling in and Moosa criticized him. Then Khizr replied that you do not have sabr.
When janaab e Hamza gave Shadat then an ayat of Allah was revealed. Thus it is evident that on the aml of the ahle bait ayat of Allah are revealed.
Shukr is different and sabr is different. When there is a difficulty then guide those who are sabir or patient. Shukr is from those who were given a reward.

فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ السَّعْيَ قَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ إِنِّي أَرَى فِي الْمَنَامِ أَنِّي أَذْبَحُكَ فَانظُرْ مَاذَا تَرَى قَالَ يَا أَبَتِ افْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ سَتَجِدُنِي إِن شَاء اللَّهُ مِنَ الصَّابِرِينَ {102}

[Pickthal 37:102] And when (his son) was old enough to walk with him, (Abraham) said: O my dear son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice thee. So look, what thinkest thou? He said: O my father! Do that which thou art commanded. Allah willing, thou shalt find me of the steadfast.

When Ibraheem was about to sacrifice Ismaeel the latter told him to follow the command of Allah. Thus it is evident that the nabi are awake even when they are asleep as the commands of Allah to do zibah of Ismaeel came in the dream of Ibraheem. As Ismaeel was being sacrificed then Allah stated that we are giving you a very high position. Those who are sabir get heaven and those who give shukr distribute heaven. Death for Ismaeel was considered as despair and with Imam Hussain was considered as something granted as a special favor by Allah. In Karbala there were many people who told Imam Hussain that if you give us permission to go into battle then you will find us of those who are thankful. When Asghar was being slaughtered Moula Hussain again thanked Allah for his mercy. This is the extent of his sabr (patience) and as sabr increases the status of his ilm increases.
In the entire history of the Masoom they are the most exalted. They have never commited sin. The Masoom has stated oh uncle my salaam on you. Your position is such that the ambiya will desire your position on the day of judgment. Thus Hazrat Abbas got this position as a result of his patience. Imam Hussain has stated that you are sulbh of the yakhin. This means that you are the backbone of yakhin.
In history there is Syed E Shirazi and when he led the prayer there was a person who recited karbala. This man recited that when Hazrat Abbas was on his horse and the zalim cut off his one hand. Then he changed to the other hand and when this was cut off he clenched the maskh of sakina in his teeth and then an arrow struck his forehead. This made the Syed E Shirazi grief struck. He told this person not to state false things. The man who recited this event dreamt and asked Hazrat Abbas for guidance. In the dream of Syed E Shirazi Hazrat Abbas came and the entire event came in his dream and an arrow struck Hazrat Abbas’s forehead. Then Hazrat E Shirazi woke up and struck himself with grief that he mis-stated the event of Karbala. Then Hazrat Abbas was hit with more arrows and swords and finally fell from the horse, Imam Hussain came toward him crying oh Abbas my main support is gone. When Hazrat Abbas was found by Imam Hussain he asked that he clean blood from his face so that he could see Imam Hussain. Hazrat Abbas also asked that his body not be taken to the tents.
